The mop and bucket that once used to take care of unsightly messes in your home now belong in a past age. With the advent of the Powerfresh 1940, it is now a lot easier and way more hygienic to keep your home sparkling clean. While the product itself is not new (in fact, it’s been on the market for quite some time), Bissell made sure it is an absolute best seller in its category. There are however some things you should know before buying, so here’s what you’ll learn in the following 2 minutes:
- just how good is the Powerfresh steam mop
- on which surface it should be used
- how well it performs, when compared with others
- where to look for a nice deal
Specifications
The Bissell Powerfresh steam mop 1940 is a unit whose basic size and form is not that larger than that of an ordinary mop. The most distinguishable features of this appliance are the water reservoir, the flat plastic cleaning head and the attached power cable. However, the Powerfresh does have a lot of hidden features in addition to the visible ones. These features include the following:
- Strain Reliever Handle
- Quick release cord wrap

- Maneuverable Swivel
- Removable Easy Scrubber
- Low profile Cleaning mop
- Optional accessories: detachable microfiber pads and fragrance discs
I’ve taken the liberty to group the most important 6 of them in the following infographic:
Here’s the most lovely video review of this product:
Pros
The pros of the 1940 steam mop are synonymous with revolutionary. Usually I’d build a standard table, but these features are so specific it would be better to tackle each one individually:
Specially designed Strain Reliever Handle
The handle assembly is composed of a specially designed short hollow aluminum rod and the handle bar itself. The design of the handle incorporates a rugged rubber grip that ensures the user has the firmest hold while using the steam mop. The rubber grip itself is attached to the aluminum rod at an angle that ensures as less strain as possible to your wrist.
Quick Release cord wraps
The quick release cord wraps make it easy to unwind the power cord as cleaning moves further from the power outlet. The wide placement of the lower and upper cord wraps make it possible to easily wind up the entire 23 ft. length of wire onto the unit during storage.
Removable water tank
The removable water tank is located at the top of the main body of the unit and can hold 15 oz of water. This water is adequate for one hour of continuous steam mopping. However in the advent that the water runs out the removable tank can be removed, refilled and replaced while the steam mop is still in use.
Smart Set steam control
The Smart Set steam controls are located on the front facing part of mop’s main body. The controls offer three steam settings namely: low, medium and high. The low steam level setting is ideal for fresh spills of substances with a low viscosity such as tea, coffee, fruit juice and ink. The medium steam level setting is ideal for spills with a higher viscosity such as fruit jam, mud, soup, jelly, ice cream, porridge and mayonnaise. The high steam setting is ideal for spills that have had some time to completely dry, thus becoming quite stubborn to removed with the lower settings.
Maneuverable swivel head
The maneuverable swivel is located between the main body and the head which is in contact with the floor. The flexible swivel joint allows for the easy manipulation of the mop head while cleaning any floor surface. The joint allows from a maximum rotation of 270 degrees, which provides ample turning room for any mopping operation. The sturdy construction of the swivel joint ensures the joint lasts as long as the rest of the unit.
Removable Easy Scrubber
The removable Easy Scrubber is attached to the back of the mop. The purpose of the scrubber is to remove stubborn stains that require a bit of scrubbing in order to allow for the loosening effect of the steam to come into play. The scrubber can be lowered to the same level with the mop head when needed or raised when not in need. This is made possible through the use of a mechanism located on the mop’s head. The scrubber can be completely unattached from the mop when it needs a clean.
Low-profile Edge-Cleaning Mop Head
The mop head covers a large floor surface area. This ensures a far shorter cleaning times. The mop head has a recessed grove through which a detachable mop pad can be firmly fixed during a steam cleaning operation. Hot steam emerges from the main body, from evenly spaced pores on the lower side of the mop head. This ensures that the steam released is evenly dispersed onto the floor surface.
Optional Accessories
- Washable Microfiber mop pads. The detachable and washable microfiber mop pads are made from a special material onto which stains and dirt don’t permanently adhere. This means the mop pads can be easily cleaned and reused repeatedly without needing replacement. A microfiber pad with rougher fibers is provided for steam cleaning jobs on surfaces requiring more thorough cleaning. Both microfiber types are machine washable and remarkably durable.
- Spring breeze fragrance disk replacement pack. The Powerfresh comes with fragrance discs that produce a sweet flowery scent while steam cleaning. The fragrance embeds onto the floor and remains after the cleaning is complete. These fragrance discs are inserted into a pouch found on the inner surface of the microfiber pads prior to their attachment onto the head of the steam mop.
Price
It’s definitely not the cheapest steam mop on the market, but check out this great offer I’ve found for the Bissell Powerfresh.
Cons
I can’t seem to find a valid con of this product, except those common to any steam cleaning system. The main source of concern when using the Bissell’s unit arises from the potential detrimental effect that the steam might have on the unsealed hardwood floors. Steam setting at the highest level has the potential of penetrating into the wood causing it to warp. Other concerns arise from the need to exercise a fair amount of care while handling the mop due to the danger posed by hot steam.
Conclusion
The Bissell Powerfresh 1940 is indeed a valuable tool to have in your modern kitchen. It not only cleans unsightly messes but also kills up to 99% of the germs in your home. It comes with a surprising amount of technologies which blend in to create a valuable and affordable product. Here’s my VGMst:
